The symptoms of rumen acidosis in cows are caused by sudden ingestion of a large amount of carbohydrate rich cereal feed or long-term excessive feeding of root crops such as sugar beets and high acidity silage feed.
Symptoms and Prevention
Symptoms
Patients with acute onset of disease, without obvious symptoms, often die suddenly 3-5 hours after feeding.
Patients with slow onset of illness may experience mental depression, loss of appetite, relaxation of the rumen, unstable walking, muscle tremors, and paralysis lying on the ground. In the later stage of the disease, the body temperature is below normal, the pulse and breathing become faster, the conjunctiva is purple, the eye sockets are sunken, moaning, grinding teeth, coma, and urine is acidic.
Preventive measures
1. We should avoid changing food too quickly, as changing too quickly can cause unbearable pain and confusion for the rumen microbiota.
2. Adhere to a good ratio of fine to coarse (ideal ratio 40:60), add enough fiber to the feed, and the by-product of coarse feed contains fiber.
3. If the production level of animals confirms that they need to consume large amounts of grains or concentrates, they should be gradually adjusted accordingly. If mixed feed is not a fixed distribution mode, then multi meal feeding is a good approach.
4. Consider the type of diet and electrolyte balance. Using mineral buffer
